March 27th Launch Event
Collaborative San Francisco
City department officials and people from all sectors of the city sat down together on March 27th to talk about how San Francisco’s diverse groups can collaborate more productively in shaping the City’s future. This event launched Collaborative San Francisco. Participants experienced som some new methods for achieving this goal and took up a range of trends affecting San Francisco today identifying conversations that needed to take place to address these trends. From projects proposed at the launch event, Collaborative San Francisco will identify two demonstration projects which address issues requiring broad public involvement and inter-agency collaboration. The intent of the projects is to demonstrate how new and innovative public-process methods now coming into use in cities in the United States and elsewhere around the world can help improve public planning and participation in San Francisco. (There is still plenty of time to suggest a project. Let us know if you are involved in a project you would like to nominate.) Collaborative San Francisco is a creation of the Neighborhood Assemblies Network (NAN) and the Bay Area Working Group on the Precautionary Principle (BAWG). The BAWG is a coalition of non-profits that helped write and pass San Francisco’s Precautionary Principle ordinances. A key element of a precautionary approach is full public participation. NAN works internationally with multi-stakeholder groups to develop and implement collaborative decision-making processes. We look forward to continuing this work in collaboration with those attending the meeting and other citizens of San Francisco to create a more collaborative San Francisco.
